Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - It was a rainy, Saturday afternoon when the Whitworth women's soccer team (7-4-3, 7-2-3) triumphed over the elements and over George Fox University (2-9-4, 2-7-2) with a 2-1 final score.
A corner kick in the 10th minute gave the bucs an advantage early. Jami Hegg (So., MF, Spokane, Wash.) took the ball and crossed it across the goal where it flew by numerous players from both squads. Carly Schilperoort (Jr., D, Issaquah, Wash.) then connected with the ball to give the Pirates the lead. The goal is Schilperoort's first in 2011.
The Bruins answered 19 minutes later when Melanie Gaither got the ball to Cassady Gardner. Gardner shot into the back of the net to even the score 1-1.
Jami Hegg made her second assist of the match when she tapped a pass to nearby teammate Mackenzie Grow (Jr., MF, Spokane, Wash.). Grow, well outside the penalty box, lofted her shot high and although the Bruin's keeper was able to tip it, her effort was not enough to prevent a Pirate point.
The second half the Whit women found themselves positioned to score numerous times but could never convert. The shot count would end at 16-6, Whitworth, and the score would remain at 2-1 for a Pirate victory.
The Pirates welcome Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday afternoon at noon.
