Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth women's soccer team (5-4-2, 5-2-2) won Wednesday afternoon against Whitman College (4-8, 3-6) on the Whitworth pitch to improve to over .500 on the season. The final score was 2-1.
The first half of Wednesday's match yielded little result for either team. The Pirates did not attempt a shot until thirty minutes into play.
in the 49th minute Chloe Cook (Jr., MF, Seattle, Wash.) broke the ice when she faced the Whitman goalkeeper, Lauren Brougham, straight on and fired her shot. Brougham deflected the ball only to be found by Cook again who capitalized on her second opportunity and finished the play with a score.
The Missionaries answered three minutes later when a joint effort by Amy Hasson and Jaclyn Rudd put the ball into the middle of the box to assist Marisa Poorboy who tied the game 1-1.
The match would be decided by one more Pirate goal in the 53rd minute. A well placed ball up the field by Mackenzie Grow (Jr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) was controlled by Chelsea Schooler (Jr., MF, Boulder, Colo.) who lobbed the ball into the net. The Missionaries' goalkeeper had ventured far from the box to challenge Schooler when Schooler put it out of reach.
Callie Bergstrom (Sr., GK, Spokane, Wash.) made six saves to keep Whitman at bay.
The Bucs face a challenging task ahead when they travel to University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran Univeristy in Tacoma, Washington this upcoming weekend.
