SALEM, Ore. – Willamette scored six straight goals in the second half to pull away for a 16-9 win over Whitworth in Saturday's Northwest Conference contest.
Miranda Piros and Anabel Ohsman led the Bearcats (6-10, 5-7 NWC) with five goals apiece. Shay Clark powered the Whitworth (1-13, 1-10 NWC) offense with three goals.
Clark initially put the Pirates ahead 2-1 with two goals in 30 seconds. The freshman scored the first on an assist from Carolyn Quinn and fired in the second on her own.
Willamette retook the lead soon after, responding with a pair of goals from Piros to take a 3-2 advantage. Hannah Meador knotted the game at three with a man-down goal, but the Bearcats scored four straight to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Ohsman and Alayna Newman opened the half with two goals for the Bearcats, but Whitworth bounced back to score four of the next five. Jordan Cain scored the first and assisted on Kianna Fiorito's goal to cut the Bearcat lead to four. After a Willamette goal, Meador and Clark scored to slice the deficit to three.
The Bearcats pulled away after Clark's goal, scoring six straight goals to take a 16-7 lead. From there, Willamette coasted to the finish for a 16-9 win.
The Pirates close their inaugural season when they take on George Fox on Sunday, April 28 at 1 p.m.
