SPOKANE, Wash. – The Linfield Wildcats jumped out to a big first half lead and coasted to a 22-3 victory over the Whitworth Pirates in Sunday afternoon's Northwest Conference women's lacrosse contest.
Alex Jenson, Gabriella Moe, and Jenna Hassel led the Wildcats (1-2, 1-0 NWC) with four goals apiece. Hannah Meador scored twice for the Pirates (0-3, 0-2 NWC).
Meador's first goal came early in the game. With the Wildcats leading 2-0, Jordan Cain found her fellow junior in front of the goal and Meader made the opportunity count by firing a shot past Kylee Duey.
The Wildcats responded by scoring the final 14 goals of the half. Linfield maintained possession for much of the period by winning nearly 80 percent of the draw controls (15-4).
Despite the deficit, Whitworth continued to battle and picked up a pair of second half goals. On the first, Liah Gingerich found a cutting Trinity Frank right in front of the net and the freshman scored her third goal of the weekend. Meador notched her second goal on a free-position shot at the end of the second half.
Linfield finished the game with leads in groundballs (19-15), draw controls (22-6), and caused turnovers (5-4). The Pirates had a higher percentage of successful clears (88%-72%).
Whitworth will look to bounce back on the road next weekend. The Bucs travel to California and battle Whittier on Saturday, March 23 and Redlands on Monday, March 25.
