Pirate Women Win PLU Invitational

SPANAWAY, Wash. – Maggie Peters earned medalist honors to lead the Whitworth women's golf team to a season-opening victory at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational on Sunday at Lake Spanaway Golf Club.

Peters shot 77-70 – 147 (+3) to finish eight strokes ahead of runner-up Avery Gill from Southwestern Oregon CC.  Allie Slingsby (81-80 – 161) finished fourth to give the Pirates two players among the top five finishers.

Whitworth trailed by one stroke after the first day, but dominated the second day to win by 21 strokes.  The final team scores were: Whitworth 329-311 – 640, Southwestern Oregon CC 328-333 – 661, Bellevue CC 333-334 – 667, Puget Sound 340-346 – 686, Pacific Lutheran 344-345 – 689, Pacific (Ore.) 345-349 – 694, CC of Spokane 359-347 – 706.

Jaymie Pentony (85-80 – 165) finished in a four-way tie for seventh place, while Cheyenne Marchand (86-81 – 167) tied for 12th place.  Ali Brandt (93-86 – 179) finished in 26th place.

Whitworth will return to action next weekend at the Puget Sound Invitational.
