TACOMA, Wash. – The Whitworth men have taken a lead halfway through the 2018 Logger Invitational swimming meet and the Pirate women are in second place after Saturday night's action.
The meet will conclude on Sunday.
Whitworth's men have won six events so far, including three relays. Ryan Grady and Byron Rossmiller set meet records in back-to-back events on Saturday night, providing the Pirates' highlights for the evening.
The men's team scores through Saturday are: Whitworth 426, Concordia-Irvine 345, College of Idaho 285, Puget Sound 253, Whitman 245, Pacific Lutheran 243, Southwestern Oregon CC 217, Lewis & Clark 214. The Pirates' lead should have been larger, but they were disqualified in the 200-yard freestyle relay for an illegal exchange after touching the wall first.
Whitworth's men showed dominance during Friday night's relays. The Bucs opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:33.27. Freshman anchor Finn McClone led his relay from two seconds behind on the final leg to claim the 800-yard freestyle relay with a meet record time of 6:56.49.
Grady won the men's 200-yard breaststroke on Saturday with a meet record time of 2:02.92. Rossmiller followed with his meet record in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.67). McClone finished second in the 200 back.
Jake Davies claimed the Pirate men's third individual victory of the night with a time of 1:56.60 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Grady added a runner-up finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:40.68) and Logan Todd finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.93).
Whitworth closed the night with a victory in the men's 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:09.66.
Hannah Galbraith swam to victory in the women's 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.24, just missing her own meet record (2:06.22) set two seasons ago.
Jamie Sieger took fourth in the women's 200 breaststroke (2:25.27) and seventh in the 200-yard I.M. (2:15.05). Even Vetter was fourth in the 200 I.M. (2:11.52).
The Pirate women finished second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:40.48 at the beginning of Saturday night and then took fourth in the 400 free relay (3:40.81) at the end of the night.
On Friday, Whitworth took third in the 200 medley relay (1:48.92) and fourth in the 800 free relay (8:02.37).
