Softball Pulls Out Two One-Run Wins at GFU

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - The Pirates took game one by a score of 1-0 and rattled off three runs in the seventh inning of game two to sweep George Fox on the first day of a four-game Northwest Conference softball series in Oregon. 

After day one, Whitworth sits at 21-5 (12-2 NWC) and the Bruins are 13-9 (9-7 NWC). 

Game One: Whitworth 1, George Fox 0 

Logan Miller was hit by a pitch to get on base, she advanced to third on a throwing error Bruin pitcher Madison Sorenson, and then she stole home on a wild pitch for the lone score of the game.

Miller went 0-1 in addition to getting hit by a pitch and Shannon Wessel and Tessa Matthews both went 1-3. Savannah Vargas went 1-2 with a walk for the Bruins. 

Madi Perez (12-1) got the win, striking out three and giving up only three hits in a complete game. Sorenson (8-3) gave up only two hits and struck out eight, but got the loss for George Fox. 

Game Two: Whitworth 7, George Fox 6 

Rheanne Lewis and Wessel batted in two runs to tie the game at six and with two outs, Perez singled to third base, scoring Wessel for the game-winning run in the top of the seventh.  

In the top of the third, Wessel brought Desi Graham home with a single to right center to go up 1-0. With one on, Michelle Silva sent one out of left field for a 3-0 Pirate lead, but the Bruins responded with a two run home run from Allison Meyer in the bottom of the inning to cut Whitworth's lead to one (3-2). 

Meyer erased the lead with an RBI double and on her next at bat in the bottom of the fifth and Annie Veatch hit a two run shot to left field to put the Bruins ahead.  

Whitworth and George Fox scored a run apiece in the sixth and in the top of the seventh, the Pirates got the game within one, scoring Natalie Edlin on a Lewis single. After back-to-back sacrifice bunts, Wessel stepped up and tripled to center, scoring Lewis and tying the game up at 6-6. With Wessel on third, the Bruins intentionally walked Silva and Perez singled with two down for the go-ahead run. Whitworth escaped the seventh inning with a runner on second on a pop out and groundout. 

Shannon Wessel went 3-4 with a walk, two RBIs, and three runs to lead the Pirates in game two. Silva added two RBIs with her home run in the third. For the Bruins, Meyer went 2-4 with three RBIs, a run and a home run. 

Ashley Trueblood started for Whitworth and recorded two strikeouts before being replaced by Megan Truesdale. Truesdale (1-2) threw two innings and recorded a pair of strikeout and the win. Sorenson (8-4) recorded her second loss in as many games, giving up the go ahead run and no strikeouts in two innings. 

Next Up: The Pirates return to action against George Fox in Newberg, Ore. for the back end of the four-game series starting at noon on March 30.
