SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's tennis team won its third straight Northwest Conference match with a 7-2 victory over visiting Pacific Lutheran on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 6-11 overall and 4-3 in the NWC while the Lutes fell to 4-11, 1-7. Whitworth will conclude the season by hosting Whitman College next Saturday.
The Bucs grabbed a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches, all by 8-4 scores. Sean Singco and Kincaid Norris defeated Michael Campbell and Marcus Lee at #1, Ben Bethards and Cameron Brewer won at #2, while Jake Bethards and Jacob Floyd won at #3.
Jake Bethards and Singco clinched the team victory with wins at #1 and #2 singles, respectively. Bethards defeated Campbell 6-4, 7-5 and Singco topped Justin DeMattos 7-6, 7-5.
Only two singles matches went more than two sets. Ben Bethards edged Lee 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6). PLU's Branson Near rallied by Floyd 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) to claim one of only two PLU points.
