FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Two goals in the first half proved to be enough for the Whitworth Pirates, who finished off an undefeated first weekend of Northwest Conference play with a 2-1 victory over the Pacific (Ore.) Boxers on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates moved to 3-4-1 overall and 2-0 in the NWC with the win, while the Boxers fell to 1-3-1 and 0-2 in conference play.
Whitworth's offense dominated the early moments of the match. The Pirates took the match's first two shots and finished the first half with a four shot and two goal advantage.
Pacific cut the lead in half in the 56th minute. Robert Nurmi grabbed a rolling pass from Cade Taniguchi and blasted a shot past Jesus Nunez to pull the Boxers within a goal.
Whitworth nearly got the goal right back just over a minute later. Zanskar Blair had a one-on-one opportunity with Boxer goalkeeper Brock Jones, but his shot rolled wide of the right post. Blair had another chance when he made a long run towards the goal, but Jones made a sliding save.
The Boxers had opportunities to tie the match in the final ten minutes, but both of their best chances were erased by Nunez. The first came on a shot from Grant Garcia, which Nunez saved easily, and the second came when Nunez beat a Boxer attacker to a cross with an empty net behind him.
The Pirates finished the match with advantages in shots (16-8), shots on goal (5-3), and corner kicks (9-2). Though he wasn't able to score, Drew Williams played a key role in the attack with three shots, two of which were on goal.
Up next, Whitworth returns to Spokane to take on Puget Sound. The Loggers and Bucs square off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22.
