HELENA, Mont. – A sixtieth minute goal from Jose Porras gave the Carroll College Saints a 1-0 victory over the Whitworth Pirates on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops the Pirates to 1-4-1 as they enter Northwest Conference play next weekend. Carroll's victory moves it to 1-1 on the year on the eve of its Cascade Collegiate Conference opener.
The Saints dominated much of the match's first half, taking all five shots in the period. Pirate goalkeeper Alex Pells kept Whitworth in the game during the first 45 minutes. The senior saved all three of Carroll's shots on goal.
The best chance for either team in the first half came on a Saints' breakaway. After a long pass snuck past two Whitworth defenders, Nico Kyriacos had a one-on-one opportunity, but it was saved by Pells.
The Saints were able to get on the board in the 60th minute. After a chaotic sequence where both teams appeared to have possession before coughing up the ball, Porras emerged from the crowd of bodies just outside the penalty area. The senior dribbled twice before giving Carroll a 1-0 lead.
Luke Denke nearly equalized for the Bucs in the 66th minute. The freshman picked up a pass with just one man to beat, but his shot sailed wide of the goal. Kyle Cacoyannis tried to get the equalizer five minutes later and his 35-yard shot was stopped by goalkeeper Kaden Connor
Carroll outshot the Whitworth 17-4 and finished the match with 8 more shots on goal. Pells finished the match with nine saves to Connor's two.
The Bucs will look to rebound when they open the Northwest Conference season in Newberg, Ore. Whitworth takes on George Fox on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
