SPOKANE, Wash. – The Northwest Conference has recognized three Whitworth University student-athletes from three different teams with its weekly awards.
Kayla Leland is the NWC women’s cross country student-athlete of the week, while Jonah Snyder is the NWC men’s soccer offensive student-athlete of the week. And Ian Kolste is the NWC football offensive student-athlete of the week.
Leland and Kolste have each earned the award for the second time already in 2017-18.
Leland (Spokane, Wash.) earned her second weekly award of the season after leading the Whitworth women to a sixth-place finish in the women’s open division of the Sundodger Invitational on Saturday afternoon with a time of 21:37.29 (6k). The senior's time and finish (7th place) were best among Division III runners at the Sundodger Invitational.
Snyder (Burlingame, Calif.) helped get the Pirates offense back on track in wins over George Fox and Eastern Oregon. He contributed three goals on the week with two assists to lead Whitworth offensively.
Kolste (Oak Harbor, Wash.), a senior quarterback, picked up his second NWC Student-Athlete of the Week nod of the season after playing the first two quarters of the Pirates’ 53-0 win over LaVerne, but that was enough to stake Whitworth to a 43-0 lead at halftime. He completed a season high 80.6-percent of his passes for 291 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. Along the way he broke Pirate school records for career passing yards and career TD passes. He now has thrown for 8,658 yards and 72 touchdowns in his Whitworth career.
