McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Whitworth University took a big first step toward claiming the 2018-19 Northwest Conference men's golf title by winning the 2018 NWC Fall Classic on Sunday at Michelbrook Country Club.
Derrick Phelps finished in second place and every Pirate finished among the top 16 individuals.
The Pirates had a three-shot lead over Pacific Lutheran after Saturday's first round, then defeated Willamette by four strokes in the final tally. The team scores were: Whitworth 295-305 – 600, Willamette 302-302 – 604, Pacific Lutheran 298-309 – 607, George Fox 306-306 – 612, Linfield 317-308 – 625, Puget Sound 318-315 – 633, Lewis & Clark 336-314 – 650, Pacific (Ore.) 335-336 – 671, Whitman 344-344 – 688.
Phelps finished one over par with a score of 72-73 – 145. PLU's Jordan Brajcich finished one stroke ahead of Phelps with a final score of 68-76 – 144.
The NWC Fall Classic counts as 25% of the final standings. Whitworth now has eight points, while Willamette has seven points, PLU six and so on. The NWC Spring Classic in early April will also count as 25%, while the NWC Tournament in late April will count as 50%.
Whitworth will finish the fall season this coming weekend at the Whitman Invitational in Walla Walla.
