SPOKANE, Wash. – Already returning the entire roster from a team that finished second in the Northwest Conference in 2017-18, Whitworth University men's golf coach Scott Kramer has announced the addition of transfer Derrick Phelps from St. Martin's University.
Phelps, from Zillah, Washington, was an All-NWAC performer for two years at the Community Colleges of Spokane while Kramer was still the head coach for the Sasquatch.
"Derrick will bring a high-level of toughness to our program and he has strong leadership skills that will benefit his new teammates," Kramer said. "His extensive tournament experience and multiple tournament victories at high school, amateur and collegiate events will be a nice addition to our talented roster."
As a sophomore at CCS, Phelps won the Grays Harbor College Invitational and finished the season as one of the top performers in the NWAC. During his one season (2017-18) at St. Martin's University, Phelps' best tournament round was a 71 at the Dennis Rose Invitational. He finished tied for 17th at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships played at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course. He averaged 77.1 while participating in 9 events and 27 tournament rounds.
Whitworth returns all ten players from a squad that finished second to Pacific Lutheran in the 2017-18 NWC standings, including second team All-NWC honoree Keegan Loo and 2017 NWC Freshman of the Year Sam Stiles.
