SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University men's golf team split into two squads for its own tournament and the Pirate teams finished third and fifth at the Kalispel Country Club on Sunday and Monday.
The Pirates' A team took third while the B team was fifth. Willamette won the title behind medalist Sam Hinton and runner up Trent Jones.
The final team scores were: Willamette 295-288 – 583, Pacific Lutheran 300-295 – 595, Whitworth A 305-307 – 612, Linfield 310-310 – 620, Whitworth B 309-315 – 624, Puget Sound 327-319 – 646, Whitman 332-323 – 655, Pacific (Ore.) 340-335 – 675.
Hinton fired a final tally of three-under par 141 (71-70) and was the only player under par in the tournament. Jones shot 75-70 – 145.
Sam Stiles, playing for the A team, finished in a tie for third with four other individuals. He shot 71-76 – 147 and was tied with Hinton after Sunday's round. Elijah Pittser, competing for the Pirate B team, finished tied for seventh with a score of 76-73 – 149.
The Pirates are now off until October 14 and 15 when they will begin the 2017-18 conference title hunt with the NWC Fall Classic at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Oregon. The NWC Fall Classic counts as 25% of the final team standings.
