Pirate Men Take 6th in Season Opener

DuPont, Wash. – The Whitworth University men's golf team finished in sixth place at the season-opening Collegiate Open hosted by Pacific Lutheran University on the Home Course on Sunday and Monday.

The Pirates shot five shots higher on Monday and dropped from fourth to sixth in the tournament standings.

The final team scores were: Willamette 289-288 – 577, Pacific Lutheran 299-286 – 585, North Idaho College 287-300 – 587, SW Oregon CC 293-296 – 589, CC of Spokane 298-296 – 594, Whitworth 296-301 – 597, PLU B 302-298 – 600, Linfield 302-304 – 606, Grays Harbor 314-303 – 617, Puget Sound 308-309 – 617, Whitman 315-318 – 633, Pacific (Ore.) – 318-330 – 648, Lewis & Clark 325-324 – 649, Columbia Basin 332-325 – 657.

Triston Hartfiel was the top Whitworth individual.  He tied for 16th place with a tally of 74-73 – 147 (+3).  JackRyan O'Neil shot 73-77 – 150 to tie for 24th place.  Both Reilly Hegarty (75-77 – 152) and Keegan Loo (74-78 – 152) tied for 27th place.  Sam Stiles moved up from 58th place after the first day to 37th with an 82-74 – 156.

Mac Turner of Puget Sound was the individual medalist with back-to-back rounds of 68 (-8). 

The tournament marked the debut of Scott Kramer, a Pirate alum, as the men's golf coach.

Whitworth will return to action on September 23-24 at the Puget Sound Invitational in Bremerton, Washington.
