Pirates Claim Rubber Game at Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. – Visiting Whitworth broke open a close game with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Puget Sound 6-2 and claim the rubber match of a three-game Northwest Conference baseball series on Monday afternoon.

Daniel Casanova and Jacob Silva each drove in a pair of runs for the Pirates, who improved to 14-10 overall and 6-9 in the NWC.

The Loggers (9-12, 5-7) got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Matt Shelhammer and Nolan Wiler.  Whitworth immediately tied the game in the top fourth.  Matthew Nelson doubled with one out and eventually scored when Ryan Bird beat out a relay to first base for a fielder's choice instead of a double play.

The Pirates took the lead in the fifth on a similar play.  Jacob Yamane led off the frame with a walk and went to third after an infield single by Nate Lamberty and an error.  Yamane scored on a fielder's choice off of the bat of Casanova.

The score remained 2-1 until the Bucs scored four in the seventh.  Yamane led off with a double and moved to third on Lamberty's single before scoring on Casanova's sacrifice fly.  Garrett Hughes added an RBI single that drove in Lamberty and Silva followed two batters later with a two-run single up the middle.

Puget Sound scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh on Riley Hunter's RBI triple.

Matthew Young threw seven strong innings to improve to 3-2 for Whitworth.  He allowed two runs on only four hits while striking out six batters.  JD Page tossed 1.1 innings of relief and Kelly Fitzpatrick got the final two outs to earn his third save.

Joe Brennan (1-2) started for UPS and took the loss despite allowing only two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings.

Whitworth will return home to host Lewis & Clark College in a four game series on Saturday and Sunday.
