REDLANDS, Calif. – Visiting Whitworth rallied from an early 3-0 deficit and rolled past Redlands 12-3 in a non-conference baseball game on Monday afternoon, completing a 4-0 trip to Southern California.
Brady Simmelink threw five innings of one-hit, shutout relief to earn his first pitching victory of the season. He struck out three batters and walked only one in relief of starter Tim Bever, who gave up three runs on four hits in 4.0 innings.
The Bulldogs (3-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Aaron Singh and Kyle Wallau had RBI singles in the rally.
Whitworth got two runs back in the top of the third on RBI singles by Daniel Casanova and Condreay.
The Pirates took the lead by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Matt Nelson's RBI single scored Condreay and tied the game. Bird's single to right field gave Whitworth a 4-3 lead and Nerud's two-run single increased the margin to 6-3.
The Bucs broke the game open with four more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Nerud's RBI single opened the rally. Nelson then drew a bases-loaded walk ahead of Bird's two-run double.
The final two runs came in the ninth as Condreay singled home another run while Jordan McGowan drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.
Starter Noah Jones took the pitching loss for Redlands, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 5.2 innings.
Whitworth, the defending Northwest Conference champions, will open league play next weekend with a three-game series at Whitman College.
