SPOKANE, Wash. – Three Whitworth Pirates received weekly honors from the Northwest Conference for performances from last weekend. Sam Stiles is the NWC Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week, while Garrett McKay (special teams) and Mason Elms (offense) were honorees in football.
Stiles (So., Colbert, Wash.) won the fog-shortened Whitman Invitational last weekend at Wine Valley Golf Club with a round of 69 (-3) on Saturday. That round included a hole-in-one on the 14th hole, which was his third hole of the day. Stiles was the 2016 NWC Freshman of the Year.
McKay (RS Jr., Tacoma, Wash.) is the NWC Football Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week thanks to an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown last Saturday at Pacific (Ore.). His score gave the Pirates a 17-6 lead in the second quarter and broke Whitworth's record for longest punt return for a touchdown. He also caught five passes for 47 yards.
Elms (Jr., Sedro-Woolley, Wash.) ran for a career-high 174 yards on just 16 carries, averaging 10.9 yards per carry at Pacific. He had touchdown runs of 45 and 87 yards. His 87-yard effort is the longest by a Whitworth player since Vern Tucker went 92 yards for a touchdown against Eastern Washington in 1948.
